Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups cake flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Food coloring gels (various colors)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (3-5 minutes).
  4. Add eggs one at a time along with vanilla extract; mix until smooth.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk until just combined.
  6. Divide batter into bowls for each color. Mix in food coloring gels to achieve desired hues.
  7. Pour each colored batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Allow cakes to cool completely before frosting.
  9. Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form; gradually add powdered sugar and whip until stiff peaks form.
  10. Assemble by layering cakes with frosting in between; frost the outside and decorate as desired.
